## Getting Started With Apple Wallet Connections

You can import transactions from your bank into YNAB through our web and mobile apps. Apple Wallet connections can only be added to YNAB using an iPhone, but no need to worry if you also use the web app or an Android device. Once set up using the steps below, Apple Wallet transactions will automatically sync to your other YNAB devices (web app, iOS, or Android).

A successful Apple Wallet connection depends entirely on open communication between the YNAB app and **a single iPhone** — the one you used to originally authorize the Apple Wallet connection (**your original iPhone**, for short).

This is different from all other linked accounts you may have with our Direct Import providers. Because of this difference:

* iOS 17.4 or higher and the most up-to-date version of YNAB are required to authorize an Apple Wallet connection.

* We recommend using your main, most-frequently-used iPhone to authorize your Apple Wallet connection.

* ["Background App Refresh" needs to remain toggled on](#background-app-refresh) in iOS Settings.

* Troubleshooting errors ([Permission Required](#permissions), [No Accounts Found](#permissions), [Delayed Connections](#delayed), [Missing Accounts](#missing)) must be completed on your original iPhone. (If you no longer have access to it, you'll need to use a new one to [remove and relink your Apple Wallet connection](#remove-and-relink) to begin troubleshooting.)

* Only first-party Apple Wallet Accounts (Apple Card, Apple Cash, and Savings with Apple Card) can be used with an Apple Wallet connection.

## How to Manage Your Apple Wallet Connection

To begin importing transactions for your Apple Card, Apple Cash, or Savings with Apple Card accounts, you need to add a new Apple Wallet connection using your iPhone.

You will need to remove and relink your Apple Wallet connection if you begin using a new iPhone. Also, removing and relinking your connection can help troubleshoot possible issues.

### How to Add a New Apple Wallet Connection

1. From the _Accounts_ tab, tap _Manage Connections_. (You may need to scroll down).

2. Tap _Add a New Bank Connection_, then select the Apple icon included in our Popular Options section.

3. Follow the prompts to establish an Apple Wallet connection.

### How to Remove and Relink an Apple Wallet Connection

**To remove**:

1. From the _Accounts_ tab, tap _Manage Bank Connections_. (You may need to scroll down).

2. Tap the Apple Wallet connection you want to remove.

3. Tap _Remove_, then tap _Remove_ again to confirm.

4. Tap the _X_ in the upper right-hand corner to close the Manage Connections window.

**To relink**:

1. From the _Accounts_ tab, tap the account you'd like to relink.

2. Tap the three dots icon in the top right corner.

3. Tap _Link Account_. (**Not seeing the option to link your account?** This means your account is still linked so you'll want to make sure you've fully [**removed the connection**](#remove-and-relink) before attempting these relink steps.)

4. On the Link Account screen, you'll be prompted to choose from your existing connections (if applicable) — or tap _Add a New Bank Connection_, then select the Apple icon included in our Popular Options section.

5. If you have other accounts associated with this connection, link those up, too! You'll do so by repeating the steps above, but when you get to step five, select the connection you just created instead of adding a new connection. **Not seeing additional Apple accounts?** You may need to [follow these steps to authorize them](#missing).

#### No Need to Worry About Removing Your Connection

Removing a connection will not impact your transaction history in your account registers, and it doesn't require you to delete any accounts. It'll unlink all the accounts you have in your Apple Wallet connection, but getting those relinked to a new connection is simple.

## How to Link Your Apple Card, Apple Cash, and/or Savings With Apple Card Account in YNAB

### How to Link a New Account

Follow these steps on your main, most-frequently-used iPhone, as transaction imports rely on the communication between this iPhone and the YNAB mobile app. Your iPhone must be running iOS 17.4 or higher, and you need to use the most up-to-date version of the YNAB app. Once you've completed these steps, transactions will import from your Apple Wallet connection, and they'll then sync to your other YNAB devices (web app, iOS, or Android). Check out [our video reviewing this process](https://youtu.be/Y9KrZDwVKFg?si=lgyHcXL7Svfg9eE_).

1. From the _Accounts_ tab, tap _Add Account_ at the bottom of your account list.

2. Tap the Apple icon included in our Popular Options section.

3. Choose an existing connection, or follow the prompts to establish a connection with Apple.

4. Select any (or all) of the accounts you would like to link in YNAB.

5. Tap _Next_.

6. You'll be prompted to edit the account details Apple populated. Tap _Edit_ to give each account a nickname and ensure the account type is correct.

7. Tap _Next_.

8. **If you added an Apple Card account**, you'll be able to set a target to pay off your starting balance. Otherwise, you're done. Success! You've added an account and linked it with your bank connection.

9. To keep transactions importing without interruption, the communication between YNAB and **this** iPhone needs to remain open. It's important to verify that "Background App Refresh" is toggled on before using your new Apple Wallet connection:

    1. Keep the YNAB mobile app open (running in the background).

    2. Navigate to the iOS Settings app.

    3. Scroll all the way down and select Apps.

    4. Scroll all the way down and select YNAB.

    5. Make sure "Background App Refresh" is toggled on.

### How to Link an Existing Account

Follow these steps on your main, most-frequently-used iPhone, as transaction imports rely on the communication between this iPhone and the YNAB mobile app. Your iPhone must be running iOS 17.4 or higher, and you need to use the most up-to-date version of the YNAB app. Once you've completed these steps, transactions will import from your Apple Wallet connection, and they'll then sync to your other YNAB devices (web app, iOS, or Android).

1. First, [reconcile](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/reconciling-accounts-a-guide-BJFE3fHys) the account. This helps limit the possibility of duplicate transactions.

2. Tap the _Accounts_ tab.

3. Select the specific account you want to link.

4. Tap the three dots icon at the top right.

5. Tap _Link Account_.

6. Follow the prompts to select your existing Apple Wallet connection. (Or, tap _Add a New Bank Connection_ and choose the Apple icon included in our Popular Options section to add a new one.)

7. Select the corresponding account on the Apple Wallet connection to link with.

8. Confirm the match between the accounts by tapping _Next_.

9. After the success message, tap _Done_.

#### Existing Apple Cash Account

If you have an existing Apple Cash account in YNAB, you may have set it up as a Cash account type. If so, you won't have the option to link the account. In order to link it to an Apple connection, you will need to [change the account type to Checking or Savings](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/changing-an-account-type-a-guide-HJRnSXWko#process).

1. Navigate to the iOS Settings app.

2. Select Privacy & Security.

3. Select Wallet.

4. Select YNAB.

5. Authorize the account.

1. Keep the YNAB mobile app open (running in the background).

2. Navigate to the iOS Settings app.

3. Select Privacy & Security.

4. Select Wallet.

5. Select YNAB.

## Transactions and Payees

### Importing Transactions

We check for transactions multiple times a day while the app is active in the background and more often when the app is in the foreground. Once imported, transactions sync to our server and then become available across other platforms that you use to access YNAB  (web, Android, iPad). We can only import transactions from the last 31 days, even if you chose a longer timeframe.

### Transfer Transactions

For privacy reasons, Apple limits the details it shares for transfer transactions. Review our steps to [manually set an imported transaction as a transfer](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/transfer-transactions-a-guide-HJOsZz4Jj#imported).

### Apple Installments

If you use Apple Card Monthly Installments, Apple will send each monthly installment bill as an outflow transaction to your account on the first of every month as a payment reminder. [Reach out to Support](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5) for specifics on how to reconcile your Apple Card account properly!

### Payees

You may notice generic payees for some of your imported transactions. For example, you may notice “Transfer” as the payee for a transfer transaction or "Apple Services" for a variety of different app store purchases. This is expected. For privacy reasons, Apple limits the details it shares for certain transactions.

If you notice your transactions consistently import with the same incorrect payee, a renaming rule may be causing the issue. Follow [these steps to delete the renaming rule](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-rename-payees-BkotNUSyo#turnoff).

To manually edit a generic or incorrect payee after the transaction imports:

1. Tap the imported transaction you want to edit.

2. Tap _Payee_.

3. In the search bar, type the name of the payee you'd like to use.

4. Tap on an existing payee to choose it, or tap _Create "\[Search Term\]" Payee_ to create a new one.

5. Tap _Save_.

### Missing or Delayed Transactions

There are a number of reasons your transactions may be missing or delayed.

* If a small watch icon appears to the left of the account name on the Accounts tab, your transactions may be delayed. Follow our [troubleshooting steps for a Delayed Connection](#delayed).

* If your phone has entered Low Power Mode or is turned off, transactions will not import, as this setting turns off Background App Refresh. Once you’ve exited Low Power Mode or turned your phone back on, transactions should begin to import again. If they don’t, follow our [troubleshooting steps for a Delayed Connection](#delayed).

* You may have revoked authorization to access one or more of your Apple accounts. Follow [these troubleshooting steps to check if authorization was revoked](#permissions) and, if necessary, reauthorize your account.

* When adding an Apple Wallet connection, Apple offers you the choice to import transactions from the last 1-2 years. Our system, however, will only bring in transactions from the last 30 days.

### Duplicate Transactions

When adding an Apple Wallet connection, Apple offers you the choice to import past transactions. If you [linked an existing account](#unlinked) without reconciling first, it’s possible that some of the transactions you entered manually before linking will be duplicated. Here's how to handle duplicate transactions:

1. First, remove the duplicates from your register.

    1. Select the transactions you don't need by tapping the circles to the left. You may need to tap _Select_ at the top of the screen.

    2. Tap _More_ (three dots icon) at the bottom of your screen.

    3. Tap _Delete_.

2. Once they're removed, [reconcile](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/reconciling-accounts-a-guide-BJFE3fHys) your accounts to be sure your balance is spot on.

3. If duplicate transactions continue to appear, try [removing and relinking](#remove-and-relink) your Apple Wallet connection.

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

### How do I keep communication open between my iPhone and YNAB?

Once you've created an Apple Wallet connection on your main iPhone and linked an Apple Wallet account, transactions will import and then sync to your other YNAB devices (web app, iOS, or Android).

To keep transactions importing without interruption, "Background App Refresh" needs to be enabled on your original iPhone. Here's how to verify whether it's been enabled:

1. Open the YNAB app on your original iPhone.

2. Keep the YNAB app open (running in the background).

3. Navigate to the iOS Settings app.

4. Scroll all the way down and select Apps.

5. Scroll all the way down and select YNAB.

6. Make sure “Background App Refresh” is toggled **on**.

#### Keeping Your iPhone Charged and Powered On for Import

Turning your phone off or enabling Low Power Mode will prevent transactions from importing until your phone is powered on and Low Power Mode has been disabled.

### Are Apple Wallet connections available outside of the United States?

**No**. Apple Card, Apple Cash and Savings with Apple Card are only available in the US.

### Can participants of an Apple Family Card import transactions?

If you have an [Apple Family Card](https://www.apple.com/apple-card/family/), only Owners and Co-Owners will be able to link their accounts in YNAB. Support for Participants of an Apple Family Card is not available at this time.

### Can a child or teen connect their Apple Wallet or link their Apple Cash Family account?

No, this feature is only available to Apple Cash account owners who are 18 years or older.

### Can I use an Apple Wallet connection on Android?

The Apple Wallet connection must be initiated from an iPhone. If you don’t have one, then you can’t create the connection.

If you do have an iPhone, but also use YNAB on other devices (like Android or an iPad), you’ll need to first create the connection via your iPhone, and then transactions will sync to your other devices where you can approve and categorize them!

### What if I'm using YNAB Together and sharing an Apple Card?

If you each have your own Apple Cards, you should each set up your own Apple Wallet connection on your individual iPhones.

If you are co-owners of the same Apple Card, you only need to set it up on one of your iPhones. Transactions made by both co-owners will import into the one account in YNAB. We recommend choosing your most-frequently-used iPhone to authorize your Apple Wallet connection.

In a shared [YNAB Together](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/ynab-together-B1nS78Cki) plan, each member can only access their own connections (that they created) in the manage connections widget. If you need to troubleshoot any of your linked Apple Wallet accounts, you'll need to do so from your original iPhone.

### What do I do if I get a new iPhone?

If you’re using a new iPhone, you’ll need to [remove then relink](#remove-and-relink) the Apple Wallet connection on that device.

### Why are my transactions importing with the wrong dates?

The transaction dates we receive should match the transaction dates listed in your Apple Wallet. If they don't match, [edit the transaction date](https://support.ynab.com/how-to-edit-and-delete-transactions-BJG4oS1s#edit) in YNAB.

### Can I use Apple Card, Apple Cash, or Savings with Apple Card accounts in YNAB without importing transactions?

Yes! Follow these steps:

1. Create an [unlinked account](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-add-an-account-ByoxswMJs).

2. [Enter transactions manually](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-add-transactions-in-ynab-HyDwA_byi) as they occur to keep the account up to date.

3. [Reconcile](https://support.ynab.com/reconciling-accounts-a-guide-BJFE3fHys) the account regularly to confirm that the balance in YNAB matches the balance with Apple Wallet. We recommend reconciling at least once a week.
