## When Should I Make a Balance Adjustment?

When assigning money in your plan, it's important to know the balances in YNAB are accurate. Balance adjustments are used to correct the balance in your YNAB account if and when you can’t find the discrepancy causing the difference from what shows in your actual account register.

The process of creating a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment occurs organically (if needed) as you go through the Reconciliation process. We highly recommend working through the steps laid out in [Reconciling Accounts](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/reconciling-accounts-a-guide-BJFE3fHys) **regularly** going forward! We recommend reconciling at least once a week. This will prevent you from needing to make balance adjustments as often (if ever!).

If you’re finding that you’re repeatedly needing to make a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment each time you go through the steps, that’s not expected, so we’d love to help! Check out our [Troubleshooting Reconciliation Issues](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/troubleshooting-reconciliation-issues-rJkijlVki#everytime) article to find your scenario, and don’t hesitate to [tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5) if you’re still stuck.

## How to Create a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment

### iOS

1. First, process all of your uncleared transactions.

    1. Go to your account register and tap the banner displaying “Show \[#\] uncleared transactions." This banner will be dismissed once **all** transactions cleared at the bank have been marked as cleared or reconciled in YNAB.

    2. If you need to change the status of a transaction, tap on the transaction, tap _Show more_, toggle the correct status (cleared or uncleared), and then tap _Save_.

    3. Remember: the transactions’ status should match with the bank.

        1. If they have cleared the bank (or are very old), they should have a filled C. If they don't, tap the transaction, tap _Show more_, and toggle _Cleared_ on. Then, tap _Save_.

        2. If they are pending at the bank, or your bank doesn't even know about them yet, they should have an unfilled C. Leave them uncleared.

2. Tap on the three dots icon button in the top right corner.

3. Tap _Reconcile_.

4. A pop-up will ask if your bank’s balance matches the current Cleared balance that YNAB is showing. **Tap _Enter Updated Balance_ and enter your current cleared balance**, tapping _Next_ when you’re done. Make sure the toggle is set to red if you're entering a negative balance.

5. Tap _Next_ again in the upper right corner.

6. Tap _Create Adjustment and Finish_.

Your account balance in YNAB should now match your current cleared account balance! We recommend reconciling at least once a week since it makes it easier to keep up with (and can prevent Reconciliation Balance Adjustments from being needed at all!).

### Android

1. First, process all of your uncleared transactions.

    1. Go to your account register and type _Uncleared_ in the search bar for a list of all of your uncleared transactions. \*No search bar available? Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top right of your screen.

    2. If you need to change the status of a transaction, tap on the transaction, tap _Show more_, toggle the correct status (cleared or uncleared), and then tap _Save_.

    3. Remember: The transactions’ status should match with the bank. If they have cleared the bank (or are very old), they should have a filled C. If they are pending at the bank, or your bank doesn’t even know about them yet, they should have a unfilled C to indicate uncleared transactions.

5. Tap _Next_ again at the top right.

6. Tap _Create Adjustment and Finish_.

Your account balance in YNAB should now match your current cleared account balance! We recommend reconciling at least once a week since it makes it easier to keep up with (and can prevent Reconciliation Balance Adjustments from being needed at all!).

### Web

1. First, process all of your uncleared transactions.

    1. Go to your account register and type “is” in the search bar. Select the option for _is: Uncleared_ from the options.

    2. **Your transactions should match the status at the bank.** If the transaction has cleared the bank (or are very old), click the grey C to the right of the transaction to turn it into a green C for cleared. If the transaction is pending at the bank, or your bank doesn’t even know about it yet, the transaction should have a grey C to indicate it is an uncleared transaction.

2. Click the _Reconcile_ button in the upper right corner of your register.

3. You’ll then be asked if the current amount matches your account balance. **Click _Let's Fix It_ or _No_ and enter your current real world account balance.**

4. Press _OK_. (If you receive a warning explaining the difference between the two balances, click _Continue_. You can also select the check box to not receive that prompt next time).

5. Now, you'll notice the _Create Adjustment & Finish_ button. Clicking that will automatically create a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment to correct your balance.

Your account balance in YNAB should now match your current cleared account balance! We recommend reconciling at least once a week since it makes it easier to keep up with (and can prevent Reconciliation Balance Adjustments from being needed at all!).

## How Do Balance Adjustments Affect My Plan Numbers?

Balance adjustments don’t just affect your account balances—they affect your plan numbers, too! Because the money in your plan in YNAB is **based** on the balances of your cash-positive accounts in YNAB, adjusting your account balances may adjust the amount of money in your overall plan. Here’s what happens:

* **For Cash accounts like checking and savings**, the adjustment amount will be added to or deducted from your Ready to Assign amount. Review your categories and [move money](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-a-guide-ryyCKbBJi) to where it needs to be now.

* **For credit card accounts**, your plan won’t be affected, but you will want to double check that you have the amount you want set aside to pay your card’s bill in your Credit Card Payment category.

Numbers still seem off? Try working through a [YNAB Checkup](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/checkup-S1vJzWGzo) to make sure everything is adding up correctly. Feel free to "undo" the balance adjustment by following the steps in the section above to delete it.

## Why Should I Use a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment Instead of a Manual Balance Adjustment?

You may be wondering, “Can’t I just change my balance from in my Account Details? There’s a section there to update the working balance.” Good question! This is **NOT** the same thing as a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment, and this will show in your register as a Manual Balance Adjustment instead.

We **don’t recommend** the Manual Balance Adjustment process since it creates an adjustment to the working balance (rather than the cleared balance). It doesn’t have the same protective behavior for your plan and overall numbers as a Reconciliation Balance Adjustment.

We **recommend** Reconciliation Balance Adjustments because this process:

* Assures the account balances match today (with no pending transaction confusion) and that you can trust your plan. Reconciliation Balance Adjustments change the **cleared** balance of the account, keeping your balances accurate.

* Makes it easier to check next time if the account balance is off. You’ll know when you last reconciled, and you’ll only have to check transactions since that time. (Any previously reconciled transactions will show with a lock icon).

* Prevents past, incorrect transactions from importing. (Transactions more than three days prior to the last reconciliation date will not import.)

* Speeds up plan loading if completed regularly. Each time you reconcile, you can then hide reconciled transactions. Once they are filtered out, they won't load every time you load your plan.

#### Reconciliation Balance Adjustments for Tracking Accounts

Do you use this manual balance adjustment process for your tracking accounts? Go ahead and try making a reconciliation balance adjustment instead so you can reap these protective benefits for your balance and transactions.
