## How to Confirm YNAB is Accurate

The YNAB Checkup is a great way to track accuracy, especially if things don't look right.

#### Changes should only be made in the current and future months

[YNAB makes adjustments between months](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/when-the-month-rolls-over-a-guide-rkyyd6qC9) so you can focus on the present. **Don't go back** and make changes in a past month, even if it's for a noble cause.

Follow the steps below, or use our [interactive guide for the YNAB Checkup](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/interactive-guide-for-the-ynab-checkup-r1gXx0PBMe).

### iOS

1. [**Reconcile**](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/reconciling-accounts-a-guide-BJFE3fHys) by confirming the transactions and balances at the bank match with transactions and balances in YNAB.

![Tapping the three dots in the upper right hand corner of the mobile apps shows the option to tap Reconcile](https://cdn.bfldr.com/NIEXAZS5/at/cmbrtck39zmcqpg8m4mhvrct/Reconcile-Button-Crop-iOS-Help-Article.png?auto=webp&format=png)

2. **Check for red (cash** [**overspending**](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/overspending-in-ynab-a-guide-ryWoxEyi)**) in your categories in the current month.** Check for a banner displaying “Cover \[#\] overspent categories" at the top of the _Plan_ tab in the current month. Tap it to review overspent categories. [Move money](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-ryyCKbBJi) from another category or Ready to Assign to get them back to zero.

3. **Check for yellow (credit** [**overspending**](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/overspending-in-ynab-a-guide-ryWoxEyi)**) in your categories in the current month.** If you pay your cards in full, [move money](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-ryyCKbBJi) from another category or Ready to Assign to get those overspent categories back to zero or positive. If you intend to create debt with that spending and pay it off over time, leave it overspent.

4. **Review all accounts.** Any Cash or Credit Accounts (savings, checking, etc.) with a positive balance adds to Ready to Assign. If a savings account impacts Ready to Assign, [assign those dollars to a savings category](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-assign-your-savings-rkJ_Yy3Rq).

    1. **Check credit card accounts.**When a [credit card has a positive balance](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/credit-cards-with-a-positive-balance-an-overview-By_H6uzJo), YNAB treats the credit card like a checking account. The balance is added to Ready to Assign.

    2. **Check for CLOSED accounts.** If closed accounts have a balance, make a [Reconciliation Balance Adjustment](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/balance-adjustments-a-guide-rko4OwILs) correction to reflect the real-life balance.

5. **Review Ready to Assign**. In the current and future months, look for a red banner displaying "Assigned Too Much" with a [negative Ready to Assign](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/when-ready-to-assign-is-negative-an-overview-HylZA0zCc) amount. If you notice one, [move money](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-ryyCKbBJi) from spending categories to get Ready to Assign back to zero.

## How to Confirm the Total Cash in YNAB Matches the Total Cash in Your Accounts

If something is still feeling off (your Ready to Assign number seems too high, too low, or just plain wrong), follow these next steps on web to confirm the dollars in YNAB match the dollars in your accounts.

**This process needs the web app** — it uses the live category view to double-check your numbers, which isn't available on mobile. Hop on desktop for this one and you'll be all set. Make sure you've already completed [the checkup steps above](#checkup)!

1. Make sure there are no [Focused Views](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/focused-views-a-guide-BksnNYqLh) selected! If so, click the _All_ button in the list of views to be brought to all categories.

2. Advance to next month, or the furthest in the future you can go.

3. In the right sidebar, when no categories are selected, note the Available amount shown in that month's summary. This is the sum of all the Available columns in your plan. Write down the number (or take a screenshot).

    1. If Ready to Assign is positive and green, add it to the Available amount.

    2. If Ready to Assign is negative and red, subtract it from the Available amount.

    3. If All Money Assigned is grey, you do not need to add or subtract. The Available amount **is** the total cash in your plan.

4. In the left sidebar, note the total amount in your Cash Accounts.

    1. If you have any [positive credit card balances](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/credit-cards-with-a-positive-balance-an-overview-By_H6uzJo) in the Credit section of the left sidebar, add the positive amounts to the Cash total.

5. The total in step 3 (cash in your plan) should match the total in step 4 (sum of positive plan accounts).

**If everything matches up**...awesome! This confirms the dollars in YNAB match the dollars in your accounts. You can trust your plan and move forward.

**If the numbers don't match up**...[tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5). It is helpful to [enable Support Access](https://app.ynab.com/support_access) ahead of time. That will grant us temporary access to your info in YNAB so that we can get to the bottom of what's happening!
