## How to Close an Account

If an account has **any** transaction history beyond the starting balance, you'll want to close (not delete!) the account in YNAB. This will maintain the history of that account in your plan and move the account to a _Closed Accounts_ section where you can access it again in the future.

Is this a **Loan Account**? The flow is slightly different for closing that account type, so you'll want these specific instructions for [How to Close a Loan Account](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/loan-accounts-a-guide-HkNSkPHJi#close).

Is this a **Credit Card Account**? Be sure to [hide your Credit Card Payment category](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/handling-credit-cards-overview-ry7cNub1s#process-close) after you've closed the account.

### iOS

1. Tap the _Accounts_ tab.

2. Tap the name of the account you'd like to close.

3. Tap the three dots icon at the top of the screen.

4. Tap _Edit Account_.

5. Tap _Close Account_.

6. If the account balance is above zero, you'll be prompted with a warning that the balance will need to be zeroed out with an adjustment transaction. Tap _Adjust Balance and Close_.

7. YNAB will automatically zero out the balance on the account, which may also remove money from your plan, so be sure to double-check and move money if you need to.

8. The account register itself will move to a _Closed Accounts_ section in the _Accounts_ tab.

**If you want to transfer the funds** to another account, click _Cancel_ to return to your account, where you can enter a [transfer transaction](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/transfer-transactions-a-guide-HJOsZz4Jj). Transfer the entire balance, then follow the steps above to close the account.

Just a reminder that balance adjustments to on plan accounts may (naturally) impact your plan. If you're closing a savings account with a $100 balance and update today's balance to $0, that $100 will be deducted from Ready to Assign.

### Where will the account go?

The account is now closed, but the history will remain in your plan. If you ever need to access the transactions in the account (or reopen it altogether), you can do that by following the steps in the next section!

### What about Scheduled Transactions?

[Scheduled Transactions](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/scheduled-transactions-a-guide-BygrAIFA9) will stop occurring in a closed account to ensure they don't affect your plan. The option to add a new scheduled transaction will now be greyed out, but you will still be able to select _enter now_ on existing transactions. To avoid issues with entering these transactions into the closed account (and for some added peace-of-mind) you can opt to delete them completely.

### Android

1. Tap the _Accounts_ tab.

2. Tap the name of the account you'd like to close.

3. Tap the three dots icon at the top of the screen.

4. Tap _Edit Account_.

5. Tap _Close Account_ at the bottom of the Edit Account window.

8. The account register itself moves to a _Closed Accounts_ section on the _Accounts_ tab.

### Web

1. From the **web app**, in the left sidebar, hover your mouse pointer over the name of the account you'd like to close.

2. Click on the edit (pencil) icon to bring up the Edit Account window.

3. If the account has transaction history, the _Close Account_ button will be available (you may need to scroll down). We highly recommend closing accounts when this option is available. It will retain the transaction history for your plan—keeping everything running smoothly.

4. If the account balance is above zero, you'll be prompted with a warning that the balance will need to be zeroed out with an adjustment transaction. Tap _Adjust Balance and Close_.

### Where will the account go?

After closing your first account, a new _Closed_ section will be available in the left sidebar—this is where you can find the closed account registers to review transactions or even [reopen an account](#reopen) if you ever need to do so.

## How to Delete an Account

An account can be deleted in YNAB only when it has no transaction history. If the account has **any** transactions (including the starting balance on mobile), the _Delete Account_ button won't appear—you'll see _Close Account_ instead. Once you've closed the account, _Delete Account_ will become available. Unless you added the account by mistake, we recommend closing rather than deleting to preserve your history and avoid unintended effects on your plan.

Is this a **Loan Account**? Loan accounts can only be deleted on the web app using the steps below.

#### Did you accidentally add an account?

If you added an account by mistake—especially one that's already synced and pulled in transactions—you'll need to delete all the transactions in that account first, then follow the steps below to delete the account itself. Keep in mind: if money has moved between this account and others via transfers, deleting those transactions can ripple through your plan. If you're not sure, [tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5) before proceeding.
