# How to Keep Your Accounts Simple

Assess each of your bank accounts to check whether they fit the criteria in this article. Add them to your YNAB plan if they do, and leave them out of YNAB if they don't!

### How to Decide Whether to Add an Account in YNAB

We know from experience that fewer moving parts is better, which is why we suggest [simplifying your finances](https://www.ynab.com/guide/simplify-finances). When you set up your accounts, **ask yourself if they fit one of these three criteria:**

1.  An account that stores money that you spend from on a regular basis (like a checking account).
    
2.  A debt account that you spend from on a regular basis (like a credit card).
    
3.  An account that stores money (like a savings account).
    

**If you don't have a match, don't add the account.** If that leaves you feeling like you've lost visibility, consider using a [tracking account](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/account-types-an-overview-BkmGM0qCq#track) instead.

#### Plan for Reality

When your accounts reflect reality, your plan is truthful and can be used to effectively guide your spending. Adding accounts that don't meet the criteria set above breaks that reality.
