## How to Enable Two-Step Verification for an Individual

1. Go to your [Account Settings](https://app.ynab.com/settings).

2. Under "Login Methods" click on the _Set Up_ button next to Two-Step Verification to turn it on. This brings up a "Set Up a Verification App" page with **specific** on-screen instructions to guide you through the following general steps.

3. Download a verification app such as [Authy](https://authy.com/download/) (recommended) or Google Authenticator. You can also use your device's native password app (like Passwords on iOS) or any other password manager that supports authentication codes. YNAB does not support hardware-based universal keys.

4. Within the verification app, add YNAB as a new account. You'll be prompted to scan a QR code **or** enter a code manually. Both of these codes can be found on the "Set Up a Verification App" page in your YNAB account settings (step 2 above).

5. In YNAB, enter the six-digit code your verification app generated.

6. Save your emergency backup code.\*

\*Your emergency backup code will get you back into your YNAB account if you’re ever locked out. Make sure to store it somewhere safe!

#### A note about biometric authentication

For your security, enabling Two-Step Verification will log you out of your connected devices and [disable biometric authentication](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-enable-and-disable-touch-id-face-id-and-app-lock-SyjrFNtR5). You can re-enable it once you've finished setting up two-step verification.

## How to Enable Two-Step Verification with Your Partner

If you’d prefer to set up and maintain individual login credentials, consider creating a [YNAB together](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/ynab-together-B1nS78Cki) group instead. Each person can then follow the steps above to [set up Two-Step Verification for their individual account](#enable).

If you would prefer to maintain one set of login credentials and you share YNAB with a partner, make sure you set up Two-Step Verification together so you can quickly log in. If you’ve already enabled it and would like to add your partner, you'll need to [disable Two-Factor Verification](#disable) first. When you're ready, make sure you both have your mobile devices handy.

1. Go to your [Account Settings](https://app.ynab.com/settings).

2. Click on the _Set Up_ button under Two-Step Verification to turn it on. This brings up a "Set Up a Verification App" page with **specific** on-screen instructions to guide you through the following general steps.

3. Install a verification app like [Authy](https://authy.com/download/) or Google Authenticator on **both** devices.

4. On each device, add your YNAB account to the verification app by scanning the QR code **or** manually entering the code. Both of these codes can be found on the "Set Up a Verification App" page in your YNAB account settings (step 2 above).

5. Using either of your verification apps, enter the six-digit code into YNAB to verify that it’s successfully set up.

6. Save your emergency backup code.

## Troubleshoot Two-Step Verification

Two-step verification is a good system to keep your YNAB account secure. But what happens if it’s a little **too** good and now you’re locked out of your account? Don’t worry! We have solutions. Which of these apply to your situation?

**Troubleshooting Scenarios**

[I don’t have my backup code](#nocode)

[I’m receiving a verification code error](#codeerror)

[I don’t know how to log in with a verification code](#login)

### I don’t have my backup code

If you don't have your backup code, our support team can help you get back into your account. [tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5) to get started!

### I’m receiving a verification code error

If your verification code is rejected, you could be having issues with your verification app. Here are a few troubleshooting steps that should resolve the issue.

* **Make sure your verification code isn’t expired.** The code that is generated is time-sensitive. If your code is older than 30 seconds, then you’ll need to copy a newly generated code into YNAB.

* **Make sure you’re on the right account.** Your verification app can connect to other services and apps, so make sure you've selected the correct YNAB account to log in. You could also have more than one YNAB account in your verification app. If one isn’t working, try the others (and then delete the one that isn’t working).

### I don’t know how to log in with a verification code

At the time of setting up two-step verification, you should have installed a verification app, like [Authy](https://authy.com/download/) or Google Authenticator, on your phone or computer. Open the app and select the YNAB account. Use the six-digit code to log in to your YNAB account.

If you’re sharing your YNAB account, check with your partner and ask if they turned on two-step verification. You can get the six-digit code from their verification app to log in. We encourage you to also have a verification app installed so you don’t have to go through this process every time you log in. ### I'm receiving a "verification required" error and can't log in

This message is unrelated to two-step verification. If you see this error when attempting to log in, please check your email for a message from YNAB and follow the instructions within.
