## How to Create a Target

Before creating a target, make sure to [create the category](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/adding-removing-and-customizing-categories-a-guide-HJFO5j909) in your plan first. Targets are added to categories—they don't create new categories.

### iOS

You can create a target for any of your categories while in Edit Plan (the pencil icon), **or** by tapping the _Details_ button when a non-credit card category is selected in your plan.

### How to Create a Target From Edit Plan

1. Tap the _Plan_ tab.

2. Enter Edit Plan by tapping the Edit (pencil) icon at the top of the screen.

3. Tap _Add Target_ to the right of the category.

4. Customize your target.

5. Tap _Save Target_.

### How to Create a Target from Category Details

This method is **not** available for Credit Card Payment categories.

1. Tap the _Plan_ tab.

2. Tap to select a category in your plan.

3. Tap _Details_ .

4. Tap _Create Target_.

5. Customize your target.

6. Tap _Save Target_.

If you choose the “Set aside another...” behavior, the target will prompt you to assign the entire target amount again, even if funds from the previous month weren’t fully spent and have rolled over. If you choose the “Refill up to...” behavior, the target will only ask you to replace what you spent or unassigned last period.

If using a custom target, you have the option to “Have a balance of...” behavior. This target is not meant to be spent from until the end of the target period, so if you’d like to spend as you go, choose the ‘Set aside...” behavior instead. You have the option to repeat targets with a “Set aside...” behavior, but this isn't possible for targets with a “Have a balance of...” behavior.

#### Set a Current Goal Target on iOS or Android

Choose your most important priority, [set it as your Current Goal](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/spotlight-BkdHBZUokg#goal), and you’ll see your progress toward that category every time you open the Home tab.

## How to Edit or Delete a Target

A good plan is a flexible one, and that includes the ability to change your target amount. You can edit a target's behavior or amount to reflect a change in your priorities, delete it altogether if you’ve reached it (or, if it no longer aligns with your priorities at all).

If you're still using one of our former target types and choose to edit it, you may see the target disappear in previous months when it resets. This is especially important to keep in mind if you're editing the target in a future month.

## Monitoring Target Alerts and Progress

### iOS

![When you tap Assign in Target details without enough available money, you'll see option to move funds from other categories to fully fund your target.](https://cdn.bfldr.com/NIEXAZS5/at/f77jsn6rx2h2rj7bghwsc8g/Target-Funding-Button-iOS-Help-Article.png?auto=webp&format=png)

Tap on a category and select _Details_ to review your progress toward a target and assign money to the category. If you don't have enough money available to fully fund the target, you'll be able to [move money](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-ryyCKbBJi) from whichever category you'd like.

As you make a plan for your spending, look to your targets for guidance:

* If your target is underfunded, a yellow available amount will be shown in the category.

* A donut chart will be available after tapping a category and selecting _Details_. This lets you know your progress toward completing your target, and whether or not you're on track. No _Details_ option after clicking on a Credit Card Payment category? Tapping on this type of category takes you directly to a screen with custom, detailed credit card information.

* For more visibility into **all** your targets at once, [Progress Bars](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/progress-bars-a-guide-SkDEhot09) can help you track your target progress from the main _Plan_ tab.

* Try using targets to [create a template](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/creating-a-plan-template-ByZJZx_R9). Assign your funds faster—while keeping your priorities in mind!

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

### How do refunds affect targets?

If your target is not showing met even though there is more in the Available column than the target needs, it may be due to a refund. Refunds are inflow transactions categorized directly to the spending category. They aren't counted towards a target, because the assumption is they were counted when the funds were originally assigned to the category (before being spent, then refunded). Once the target period rolls over, any refund money still in the category will then count towards the next target period.

### Can I change a target in a future month and not impact the current month?

No. Editing a target will change it in _all_ instances of that target, in prior and future months.

### Can I set a biweekly target?

There is no way to set biweekly targets in YNAB, but you can still use our other targets to accomplish the same goal!

* Option one: Use a [weekly target](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/getting-started-with-targets-ryAEP08xC#weekly) with the "Set aside another..." behavior. When you create the target, use half the amount of your biweekly expense as your weekly target amount. When choosing this option, YNAB will occasionally prompt you to set aside more than you need. This happens when the day you've chosen for the target occurs five times during the month.

* Option two: Use a [monthly target](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/getting-started-with-targets-ryAEP08xC#monthly) with the "Set aside another..." behavior. First, divide the annual total by 12. Use that total as the monthly target amount. When choosing this option, money will build up in the category over the course of the year to cover future biweekly expenses.

### How do I set a target for every four weeks and not monthly?

Set a [weekly target](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/getting-started-with-targets-ryAEP08xC#weekly) for 1/4th of the amount needed every 4 weeks. This works for any goal that recurs every X weeks—just divide the total amount by X and set that as your weekly target.

### Why does my ‘Refill up to’ target show as underfunded for next month even when my category balance already meets the target?

Leftover funds don’t count toward “Refill up to” targets until the new month begins. This prevents you from thinking next month is fully funded only to have less if there’s unexpected spending before the current month ends.

When assigning money in future months, we recommend assigning the full amount of the target. When the month starts, make sure Available category amounts reflect your priorities. If there’s extra, use the [Reduce Overfunding Auto-Assign option](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/auto-assign-a-guide-r1gBNbBJo#options) to send it back to Ready to Assign.

### Why does my yearly target show as met when I haven't assigned anything to it this year?

Yearly targets track _funds set aside_ across the full target period — not just what's currently in the category. If you spent the category down at the end of last year's period, the target can still display as met until the new period begins.
