Learn how and why you might notice a negative number in the Assigned column. Rest assured this isn't necessarily a problem as long as the Available number isn't negative in a future month. Take steps to avoid negative numbers in future months, as this can cause unintended overspending at the start of a new month.

A negative number in the Assigned column typically happens when a category has cash left over from a previous plan month, which gets moved to a different category in the current month. Let's review an example.

## The Monthly Rollover

At the end of May, I had $55 left over in my Running Shoes category (Available column), and it all rolled into June.

I decided not to assign any **more** money in June, having just broken in the perfect pair of kicks! 👟 This leaves the Assigned column at $0, but the Available column will show the $55 that rolled over.

## The Realization

Suddenly, I realize I need extra money in my Gifts category for June (lots o' birthdays). I move $35 from Running Shoes into Gifts, knowing I'll still have $20 left Available...you never know when a vibrant pair of orange shoelaces will catch your eye.

## The Results

Any time money is moved out of a category, the Assigned column value will decrease by that amount. Since $0 was assigned in Running Shoes this month (June), The Assigned column in June's Running Shoes category will **decrease to negative $35 ($-35)**, whereas the amount assigned in the Gifts category will **increase by $35 (+35)**.

The full equation is available in the web app. I can select my Running Shoes category and review the information in the right sidebar of the web app:

$55 Cash Left Over From May
\-$35 Assigned This Month
 $20 Available This Month

**As long as the Available amount isn't negative, it's all good**—there's no reason to worry about that negative number in the Assigned column!

If the [Available column turns yellow or red](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/colors-and-icons-in-your-plan-HJQv_XHko) though, you may want to move some money back. If you'd prefer not to move money back to the category this month, and the category has a target, you can [snooze the target](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/snooze-a-target-HyS4E5rZT) in the current month to prevent it from showing as Underfunded.

#### YNABing in the Future?

Avoid negative Assigned amounts in the future. If you spent money in the current month, it can cause some unintended overspending at the start of the new month. When assigning or moving money in a future month, be sure that the Assigned column never dips below zero!

To fix negative assigned amounts in future months, follow these steps **in the web app**:

1. In the [plan header](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/the-plan-header-BkmiuJ_C9), click the arrow to the right of the month and year to move forward to the "most future month."

2. Click the [Auto-Assign](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/auto-assign-a-guide-r1gBNbBJo) button _Reset Assigned Amounts_. This will reset the assigned column to zero in that month.

3. Repeat these steps in each previous month, working your way back to the current month.

4. If you have extra funds in Ready to Assign, assign them to categories in the current month and celebrate!
