## How to Enter a Split Transaction

### iOS

1. Tap the _Home_ tab.

2. Tap the +_Transaction_ button at the bottom of the screen.

3. Enter the amount.

4. Tap the Category section.

    1. Tip: To split a previously entered transaction, tap its category and continue with the steps below.

5. Tap _Split Between Categories_.

6. Select all the categories you want to split the total between, or create new categories.

7. Tap _Next_.

8. On the Splits screen, enter in the amount you want for each category split.

9. Tap the checkmark at the top of the screen_._

10. Tap _Save._

#### Quick Tips

* If there is any amount remaining next to "Remaining" when you tap _Done,_ YNAB will prompt you to **auto-distribute** the remainder to each of the splits (or you can go back and actively assign it yourself). Auto-distributing the remainder allows you to proportionally distribute any sales tax to each part of the split.

* If you have a transaction to divide equally between each split category, you can leave them all equal to $0, and YNAB will Auto-Distribute the total evenly across all of the splits. However, if you leave only one split category at $0, it will be skipped in the Auto-Distribution and remain at $0.

* There's no need to type the amount itself into the final split category. Tap a split category and then the amount above _Remaining_ to apply that amount to the selected split.

* If you have recurring transactions with the same split each time, save time by setting them up as automated [scheduled transactions](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/scheduled-transactions-a-guide-BygrAIFA9#add).

* If you’re [approving transactions](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/approving-and-matching-transactions-a-guide-ByYNZaQ1i#approving), you can swipe right on an uncategorized transaction and tap _Split Between Categories_ to add a split.

#### Quick Tips

* **YNAB can automatically do the math for you**—if there is any amount remaining next to "Amount remaining to assign" when you click _Save,_ YNAB will prompt you to **auto-distribute** the remainder to each of the splits (or go back and actively assign it yourself). Auto-distributing the remainder allows you to proportionally distribute any sales tax to each part of the split.

## Edit Individual Splits

Each split line can have its own payee, category, and memo, or be turned into a transfer. Use the sections below to make changes to a single split without affecting the others.

### Customize Individual Splits

Change the **payee**, **category**, or **memo** on a single split line. This is useful when one transaction covers more than one vendor, when you want to recategorize just one piece of a split, or when you want to note specifics for a single line.

### iOS

1. On the Splits screen, tap the **three dots icon** to the right of the split you want to update.

2. Choose the field you want to change: _Change_ _Category_, _Add_ Payee, or _Add Memo_.

3. Make your edits, then return to the Splits screen.

4. Tap the checkmark at the top of the screen.

5. Tap _Save_.

3. Make your edits, then return to the Splits screen.

4. Tap _Done_.

5. Tap _Save_.

### Web

1. From the account register, double click the split transaction to open it.

2. On the individual split row, click the field you want to update: _Payee_, _Category_, or _Memo_.
