Ask yourself one question every time money comes in, or whenever you're deciding what to assign or which category to fund first: _what's it for?_ Choose from five possible answers. Money can be for now, for later, for ease, for you, or for change.

This isn't just a mindset. It's a practical way to decide what to do with your Ready to Assign money, and which categories to prioritize when there isn't enough to go around.

### For Now

Decide what's urgent and what can wait. Assign to the categories covering what's right in front of you—rent, groceries, gas—before anything else. Once that's covered, worry about money dissipates.

### For Later

Future expenses are always coming. Create and fund categories now for expenses you know are coming—an annual renewal, a holiday, a car repair—so you're not scrambling to assign for them later.

### For Ease

Assign a full month's worth of expenses ahead of time, and you stop worrying whether bills will get paid on time. This is what we call [Getting a Month Ahead](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/getting-a-month-ahead-HJidy13C5). Last month's money is calmly spent this month, because it's already assigned.

### For You

Assign to a personal spending category for things like hobbies, dining out, or that one gadget you keep eyeing — whatever lights you up and excites you. Even a few dollars toward something you care about changes it from a wish into something real.

### For Change

Sometimes change catches us unaware, and sometimes we plan for it. A category set aside for change means money doesn't have to be the thing holding you back when it happens.

## Deciding What to Assign or Fund First

When your Ready to Assign balance doesn't stretch to cover every category, run through the five answers in order: cover **For Now** categories first, then **For Later**, then whatever's left toward **Ease**, **You**, and **Change**. This is the same priority logic behind [Auto-Assign](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/auto-assign-a-guide-r1gBNbBJo) and the [Underfunded](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/underfunded-a-guide-BJwPhQO09) button. Both are built to help you act on "what's it for?" faster, without doing it category by category by hand.

You can also pin your highest-priority categories or set a Current Goal in the [Home tab](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/spotlight-BkdHBZUokg) to keep "what's it for" visible while you plan.
