Invite up to five trusted individuals to join your YNAB Together group (all for the price of a single subscription). Navigate YNAB Together as a group manager or a group member, and learn how plans are shared.  Each person has their own login, so you can safely collaborate with those who share a financial connection—even if they live far away.

YNAB is an amazing tool and method for individuals, but YNABers are not just individuals—they're spouses, partners, mothers, fathers, caregivers, and trusted collaborators. YNABers have meaningful relationships and money is an important aspect of those relationships. YNAB Together allows people in these interdependent financial situations to actually use YNAB together: creating plans, sharing plans (if they wish), and enjoying happier, healthier relationships as a result.

## YNAB Together Glossary

* **Group Manager**: The person who subscribes to YNAB and is responsible for billing. Their subscription allows group members to use YNAB, which is why only the group manager can invite members to the group.

* **Group Member**: These are the individuals who you invite to share your subscription. Members’ plans are always automatically shared with the group manager.

* **Plan Owner**: The person who creates a plan is by default the plan owner. If desired, this plan ownership can be transferred to another member in the group at any time.

* **Avatar:** A letter or emoji to help distinguish members in a group.

* **Your Plans**: These are the plans that you (as group manager or group member) own.

* **Plans Shared With You**: Apart from the plans automatically shared with the group manager, plan owners choose whether to share plans with other group members.

* **Plan Sharing**: Giving another group member edit access to your plan, including all accounts and transactions within that shared plan. They can do everything within the plan except manage sharing with other members, delete the plan, or Fresh Start the plan.

## How to Invite Members to a Group

You can invite up to five additional members to join your YNAB Together group! These can be new or existing YNAB users. If they have an existing subscription, we’ll help them cancel it (fear not, their plans will be waiting for them in YNAB Together!). YNAB Together is available to all YNAB users for the price of a single subscription. As the group manager, your subscription can be managed through YNAB directly, the Apple App store, or the Google Play store. We do have a few limitations on who can join a YNAB Together group as a group member, which we'll go over in the [How to Join a Group](#join) section below.

As the group manager, you’ll be able to choose which of your plans to share (and which ones to keep private). If you're inviting someone that does not yet have a YNAB account, be sure to send the invite and share a plan before having them create their account. If you choose to share a plan, members will have full edit access.

#### **YNAB Together Avatars**

Avatars are colorful circles to help you distinguish between members of a YNAB Together group. These are visible in the web app but aren't currently available in our mobile apps. Avatars help you track who [moved or assigned money in your plan](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/moving-money-in-your-plan-ryyCKbBJi#tracking). They're visible in the web app when you:

* Click _Recent Moves_ at the top of your plan.

![Avatar shows to the right of a Recent Move indicating who moved the money in the plan. ](https://cdn.bfldr.com/NIEXAZS5/at/4n934phxfwgr5r633m5w/Who-Moved-Money-Recent-Moves-Web-Help-Article.png?auto=webp&format=png)

* Click the clock icon that appears when hovering your cursor to the right of the assigned number in each category.

When a group member accepts an invite to YNAB Together, they're assigned a color; this can't be changed.

By default, the first character in the group member's name will be shown as the avatar. Most group members will see the first letter of their first name. If an emoji is the first character of their name, that will be shown instead of a letter. You can change your name (and add an emoji as the first character) when you access YNAB Together. Here's how:

1. Click the name of your plan on the web app.

2. Choose _YNAB Together_.

3. Click on your name.

4. Click the edit pencil icon.

5. Once you update your name and click _Done_, the update will be visible to all members of your group.

#### **People ages 13+ in the U.S. and 16+ everywhere else can be invited to YNAB Together.**

We’ll ask you for their first name and email address, and then you can choose which (if any) plans you’d like to share with them. If you don’t share a plan, the member will be prompted to create a new plan upon joining your group. (We’ll show them how.)

We’ll send an invitation by email, and all they need to do is click the link to join with their existing YNAB account or create a new one! They'll have 14 days to accept before the invite expires, but you can always resend if needed. Three days before expiration, they’ll receive a friendly reminder email.

#### A Heads Up about Single Sign-On (SSO)

Does someone that you’re planning to invite already have a connected Google or Apple SSO login associated with **your** YNAB account? This is especially common for partners currently sharing a YNAB account! If so, you must disconnect their login credentials in your account settings **before** they can accept your invite. Otherwise, that login will be recognized as in-use (because it is!) and we’ll be unable to create a new account for them.

## How to Join a Group

### If You're a New YNAB User

First off, welcome to YNAB! In order to join the YNAB Together group, you’ll first need to create an account, but we’ll walk you through each step when you accept the invite.

![In app invite with create new account highlighted](https://cdn.bfldr.com/NIEXAZS5/at/p5vrbr8cwsrtxvjcjghscgnp/YNAB-Together-New-Accept-Invite-iOS-Help-Article.png)

Whether you create your account before or after accepting a YNAB Together invite, you'll be able to open any plans that have been shared with you right away. A few things to keep in mind as you begin your YNAB journey:

1. The group manager will take care of the billing, so you don’t need to pay anything (woohoo!)

2. Any plans you create will always be shared with the group manager. However, you can choose to share (or not share) any of your plans with fellow group members.

3. You always have full access to our award-winning Support team. Just [tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5)!

### If You're an Existing YNAB User

Get ready to level up your YNAB experience! With YNAB Together, your group manager is responsible for billing, so you now have one less subscription to worry about.

![In app invite and join with existing account section highlighted](https://cdn.bfldr.com/NIEXAZS5/at/skq763grhhxhvsnwk423j6m/YNAB-Together-Existing-Accept-Invite-iOS-Help-Article.png)

1. **If you subscribed directly through YNAB**, we’ll automatically cancel your subscription. If you have an annual subscription, we’ll issue a pro-rated refund back to your original form of payment. [Contact support](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5) if you haven't received your pro-rated refund within ten business days. If you have a monthly subscription, no pro-rated refunds are available, but we’ll cancel the subscription for you.

2. **If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store**, please [tell the chatbot you need a human or send us an email](https://support.ynab.com/en_us/how-to-get-help-SygqcvtC5). We're working on including all subscription types in YNAB Together—yours is not currently supported, but **we can still help you join the YNAB Together group!**

3. **If you have a Gift Subscription, College Year,** or **Free Trial** you will forfeit any remaining time when you join a YNAB Together group. Please reach out to our Support team with any questions.

Even though you won’t be paying for YNAB anymore, you’ll still maintain your own user account and login credentials. Any **existing** plans associated with your account will be brought with you and will be automatically shared with your group manager. This also applies to any **new** plans that you create.

If you’d rather keep your existing plans private, you'll need to sign up for YNAB Together by creating a new account with a different email address. Keep in mind that you'll need to continue paying for a separate subscription for your existing account in order to maintain access to those private plans.

If you have an expired subscription (or expired trial account) associated with the email address that you’d like to use, any plans associated with that account will be brought with you too.

## Sharing Plans

You can choose to share (or **not** share!) plans with other members in your group. Sharing a plan means giving another member edit access to your plan, including all accounts and transactions within that shared plan. They can do everything within the plan except manage sharing with other members, delete the plan, or make a Fresh Start of the plan.

**If you are the group manager**: All plans (even ones that an existing user brings with them when they join) are always shared with you.

**If you are a group member**: You may choose who else within your YNAB Together group you’d like to share your plan(s) with! Keep in mind that the group manager can access and make changes in any plans that you bring with you or create once you are a part of their group.

### How Direct Import Connections Work In a Shared Plan

All members on a shared plan can link their own bank accounts. However, each member can only access their own connections (that they created) in the manage connections widget.

All members on a shared plan can close and/or delete an account, edit account name/notes, and unlink an account. However, **members cannot add, remove, authenticate, or troubleshoot connections they do not own**. If a bank connection needs attention, you’ll need to reach out to the owner of that connection.

Unsharing a plan or removing a member from a group unlinks that member’s linked bank accounts.

## Transferring Plan Ownership

There are a number of reasons why you might want to transfer plan ownership. The creator of a plan is the initial owner, and **only the plan owner** has the ability to make a Fresh Start or delete the plan altogether. Also, only the plan owner can share/unshare the plan with other group members (but the group manager always has access).

When you're the plan owner, the plan appears under the _Your plan_ section within YNAB Together and on your plan selection screen.

You can invite up to five additional people to join you. A YNAB Together group can be two to six people in total.

### Can I accept an invite to YNAB Together if I have an existing user account and/or subscription?

Yes! If you have a current YNAB managed subscription, we’ll cancel it for you and refund you for any remaining time. If you have an Apple or Google managed subscription, please reach out to our Support team for guidance.

### Can I invite my kids?

Yes! People ages 13+ in the U.S. and 16+ everywhere else can be invited to YNAB Together, up to six members in total. If they don’t already have a YNAB account, invited members can create one to join the group.

#### Age Restrictions

To accept an invite to YNAB Together and create an account, users must be 13+ in the United States (16+ outside of the US).

### Can I join more than one YNAB Together group?

Currently, you’re only able to be a part of one group at a time with the same email address. You can create or join more than one group by using a different email address.

### What is the difference between a group manager and a member?

A group manager is the person who subscribes to YNAB and is responsible for billing. Group members are individuals who are invited to share the group manager’s subscription.

### Will my plans be shared within my YNAB Together group?

* If you are a new user, any new plan you create will be accessible by your group manager.

* If you are an existing user, any plans that you bring with you (from a previous trial or subscription) will be shared with the group manager, as well as any new plans you create.

* Sharing plans among the group members is optional.

### If I share my plan with another group member, what can they do with it?

Any group member you invite to share your plan can do everything within the plan except manage sharing with other members, delete the plan, or make a Fresh Start of the plan. This means that they can review all accounts and transactions within the plan, and they can disconnect, or edit notes for any connection regardless of whether they created it. However, **members cannot fix or troubleshoot connections they do not own**. If a connection needs attention, they’ll need to reach out to you (the owner of the connection).

### Who completes onboarding steps for a shared plan?

Any group member with access to a shared plan can complete that plan's onboarding steps, and progress syncs across all accounts. This means members can pick up where others left off — for example, if one member completes the Add Accounts step, other members will see that step already done when they open the plan. Any member can then complete the remaining steps to finish onboarding the shared plan together.

### Can I share a plan with someone that isn’t a part of my YNAB Together group?

At this time, sharing only happens between members of a YNAB Together group.

### What does it mean to be a plan owner?

The person who creates the plan is by default the plan owner. If desired, this ownership can be transferred to another member in the group at any time. **Only plan owners can delete the plan or Fresh Start the plan**. Plans belong to user accounts, not subscriptions. This means that any plan you own will remain with your account whether you are a part of a group or not.

### Can I make someone else the owner of a plan?

Yes! You can [transfer ownership of any plan](#transfer) to another member of your group.
